Why is music important to Middle School students? Well, we asked our students.
“It’s fun!” “We can express ourselves and be proud.” “It is creative—develops self-esteem and confidence.” “It’s a great experience, and everyone can do it!”
These are the reasons all students take music at St. John’s Middle School, encompassing a wide range of creative experiences. Highlights of the year include the Christmas and Spring Concerts. Throughout the year, students have every opportunity to sing in the choir or play in ensembles and chamber groups. As one of our students said:
“Sooner or later, we will realize it’s the best thing that ever happened to us.”
The “state-of-the-art” Performing Arts Centre reflects the quality and variety of music opportunities available to students, from the 20 unit midi-lab (computer and music recording lab) to the spectacular music rehearsal space (which contains a grand piano, full drum kit, electronic pianos, amplifiers, guitars, bass guitars and orchestral percussion), 4 practice rooms and of course our 400-seat theater.
The music programme encompasses a wide range of creative experiences which include music appreciation, IB music, AP music, Choir, Chamber Orchestra, Jazz Band, Vocal Jazz, Girls’ Choir, Chamber Choir, and the opportunity to audition for the AMIS [Association for Music in International Schools] International Honor Band, Choir, Girls Choir, Vocal Jazz, Jazz Band and Orchestra Festivals that are held throughout the world. Performance opportunities include recitals, musicals and concerts throughout the year, both within school and for the community.
St. John’s organizes private instrumental lessons for children and adults. Lessons are available for students after school and during free periods, lunch, recess and at flexible times for adults. Lessons are usually 30 minutes once a week, but longer or shorter lessons can be arranged and are charged on a pro rata basis. Our program also offers preparation for external exams such as those of the Associated Boards of the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity College.
